Altnahinch 13th June 2010

A few of us visited Altnahinch. Weather good , bit overcast and NW wind 4.

No fishing showing around dam and the five of us fly fished and used spinning tackle. Water levels lower than usual

All fish caught were on spinners. Greenfish seemed to be the spinner they like here and it took

all the brown trout caught. Most activity around the dam wall near car park.

Port Muck evening of 9th June 2010

Took a run down to Port Muck this evening for a spot of spinning from the rocks.

Big tide was filling and seas rough with lot of loose weed making fishing difficult.

Fished for about 2 hours before calling it a day as I was getting soaked from the surf.

No fish caught though lots of gulls working about 100 yds offshore . May give it another go tomorrow night.

Mill Lough Bellanaleck

Was working in area of Enniskillen today so loaded my fly gear into the car in case I got a chance to use it.

Work finished about 4pm so headed off to Mill Lough in Belanaleck. Few rain showers around but set up gear anyhow. This lough is very scenic and is well equipped with fishing stands around the shores.

A lot of the shores acan also be waded and boats are allowed which can be hired locally

and are moored at one of the two car parks. The water was gin clear and showing the stoney marled bottom to this lough . Fly life was prolific with large olives and buzzers hatching and fish taking advantage.

I think this lough gets a few mayfly as well as it is only a stones throw from the Erne and access to good coarse fishing with good stands for pike, roach, rudd and bream.

Only fished about an hour and hooked a couple of rainbows around 1lb. I must try to get back here for a longer spell and get a boat on the water. Some really large fish were showing further into the lough.

Killylane Wednesday night 26th May 2010

Very windy and showery this evening. Water still very cold.

Level of reservoir is much lower now and a few fish showing.

I did'nt venture too far from the wall as fish were moving in that area.

Caught a good brown on a damsel nymph but (see pic)

After it was dispatched I spooned out of curiosity only to find it was crammed full of sweet corn!!.

Poachers at their work again probably after dark. Its about time DCAL made a better effort to stamp out this sort of thing or at least supply a phone number where bona fide anglers can report such incidents.

Port Muck Islandmagee

Warmest day of the year so far and very sunny. Decided not such a good day for the fly so headed off to Port Muck with my spinning rod. Walked the shoreline to the right of the car park and fished from the rocks facing Muck Island. I fished from low water at around 2pm to nearing high tide at about 6pm.




Few very small coalies taking lures almost as big as they were . Caught one or two on a small blue surface plug as well. A few others bait fishing and spinning but nobody catching anything of note. A small fishing boat tried to make it over the causeway which can be seen joining to the Muck island at low tide. Water was too low and he need a boat gaff to get relaunched.



A very scenic place and the and what with this and the great weather, lack of fish was no big disappointment











A lot of this plant growing among the rocks. I think its called thrift or sea pink. Certainly looks a lot better here than in a flowerpot somewhere.

Lough Mourne near Carrickfergus

Fished Lough Mourne near Carrickfergus this evening. Water levels quite high making a most of the bank inaccessible but still one or two fishable in places which required quite a long trek over and through heavy scrub to get to.

The air was thick with large black buzzers and smaller apple green ones. There was little wind and a flat calm extended into quite a large part of the lough. Not a fish to be seen moving when I arrived at about 6.30.

Later around 9pm a few small fish were rising to the buzzers but they were too far out to cover or rising under submerged trees making casting impossible

Nothing caught but still a pleasant evening except for the large swarms of biting midges in the shallows.

Evening at Killylane

Visited Killylane near dusk for a few throws with the fly. A beautiful evening and very calm.
There was a good hatch terrestrial hawthorn flys along the banks, some of which made it onto the water
just before any wind there was had disappeared. I walked the east bank and saw a fish steadily. Put on a single black hawthorn imitation with a drop of permafloat. Two minutes later he was in the bag.

A nice brownie of 1.75 lbs. which gave a good account of itself.

The wonderful sunset was probably due in part to volcanic ash in the atmosphere
